Free Lesson #3 - Scale Patterns

Scales are a great resource and something that all musicians should practice regularly. However, the traditional method of practising scales, up and down from root to root, is not much help when it comes to improvising. The problem is, you are only learning the notes in one particular sequence. Repeated practice then makes this one sequence a fixed habit.

When you are improvising, you need to be comfortable moving from any note in the scale to any other note in the scale. If you have only practised the notes in one particular sequence, you are really limiting yourself. Practising scale patterns will free you from this habit and help to unlock your scales.

There so many different possible scale patterns, starting on every note of the scale, it would be impossible to list them all here. What is provided below is one example to demonstrate the concept. The book contains eight scale patterns, plus another four which are combinations of the first eight patterns, giving you twelve different scale patterns to practice. All 12 patterns are written in all 12 keys with audio play-along tracks at five different tempos for each scale pattern, giving you 144 scale patterns with 720 embedded audio files to work through.

Because of the mixture of leaps and steps in the minor pentatonic scale, these scale patterns include irregular intervals. The resulting combination of leaps and steps can be challenging at first but will be of great benefit later. They require your brain to be fully engaged when practicing and that is always a good thing!

This lesson is an extract from the "Minor Pentatonic Scales" by Buster Birch, which is part of the "How To Learn To Improvise" series of interactive digital books. The book includes a thorough practice routine and series of exercises in all 12 keys, 189 pages, 369 notated musical examples, 1340 embedded audio files, 7 different backing tracks for practising improvising in various different styles, including Swing, Bossa Nova, Pop and Blues, in all 12 keys.

As with all of the books in the series, the audio examples are embedded and immediately available at the touch of a screen, making them extremely convenient to play along with.
